Nobody knows for sure how old yoga is, but recent areheological evidence suggests it may be as much as 5,000 years old. Many ancient statues show people in yoga postures, apparently meditating, which emphasizes that what we in the West think of as yoga is only one part of an entire philosophical system of which the ultimate aim is enlightenment - oneness with the Supreme Being or, in more modern terms maybe, achieving and maintaining a state of peace and happiness.
Medically and scientifically proven at the physical and mental level, yoga can be successfully used as therapy by people who suffer from backache, arthritis, or rheumatism - in fact, yoga postures can help just about every physical ailment known to date. As a means of encouraging relaxation, normalizing high blood pressure, helping stave off anxiety, dealing with stress, yoga is as effective today as it was thousands of years ago.
